THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

King David says of the Lord “He is my Shepherd” David knew who God was. He was the one who fought his battles, He was the one he called on in time of trouble, He was the one who delivered him from trouble, He was the one who forgave his sins, King David knew who God was to him, He was his shepherd.

Psalm 23:1 THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle, and was gathered at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah; they encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephes Dammim.

  • And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array against the Philistines.

Goliath was the champion for the Philistines. He was six feet in height. His battle armor was a bronze helmet, he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. And that is not all, this Philistine Goliath, had a spear like a weaver’s beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him. He was going to fight the armies of Israel and defy the army of God. So, he stood and challenged them, saying why have you come out to fight me, choose a man and let him come out and fight me. Goliath said “(I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together)” When Saul and all Israel heard these words of Goliath, they were so afraid. But David knew his God, he knew God would help him, he knew God would deliver him and he knew God was his strength. When his brothers thought that David could not fight Goliath, when King Saul thought David could not fight Goliath, David was sure that he could fight Goliath. David knew who he was, he was God’s anointed, and he let them all know that he had confidence in what he could do because he was a shepherd boy, who watched his father’s sheep’s day after day, and sometimes he had to fight off bears and lions who would come and attack the sheep to kill them. Just like David says, “The Lord is my Shepherd” He knew the Lord would watch over him. (v36)”Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine would be like one of them, seeing he has defiled the armies of the living God. You see, God had been with David while he was shepherding his father sheep’s. God was divinely preparing David to be His King.

The Lord is my shepherd. He is your shepherd to if you are reading this blog. Just like He was with David, God is with all His people who love and call upon Him. He will fight your battles. When the forces of life overtake you and your Goliath is staring you in the face, you just have faith in God, call on Him in prayer, know His word and act upon His word and wait for your victory. You know I use to think that I had more than a mustard seed of faith, but I was wrong. You see if you think you have big faith it is only a mustard seed of faith when God is looking at it. So just today, I said to God, “I am using my mustard seed of faith while I wait for your deliverance” “God my big faith that I thought I had been nothing to you, so in this moment of my need, I am using my mustard seed of faith, right now as I stand before my Goliath”. Thank you, precious Jesus, for you love toward me.

David had confidence that God would deliver him, God has delivered him before from the paws of the lions and bears. Now this Goliath is going against His people, Israel, and David faith was in God to fight their battle. David was just a shepherd boy, but he was willing to lay down his life for the sheep. Jesus Christ laid down his life for us, whom He call my “sheep’s”. We are like sheep’s who are lost and need a shepherd, or we can get lost; by wondering away from God, by our own futile self- remedies’ ways and our attempts at self-righteousness. It is the nature for Christians to drift away from God, even though we are saved. Therefore, we are in need of a shepherd. It’s as Isaiah has said: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6).

So therefore, Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep”. (John: 10:11). NKJV
